Why You Should Focus On One Social Platform
What’s one of the most common mistakes I see small business owners making when it comes to social media marketing? They want to be on ALL the social media platforms.
I hear this all the time: “We need to be on Facebook & Instagram & Twitter, and probably Youtube too? Oh and what’s up with Pinterest? I also got an email from LinkedIn saying people want to connect with me. How do we do that?”
Well, I’m here to give you permission NOT to do it all. Actually, I’m here to encourage you to just choose one. And here’s why…
it’s about quality over quantity.
It all comes down to the age old quality over quantity debate.
We were having a Lord of the Rings marathon last weekend. At one point, Bilbo Baggins said he was spreading his butter over too many slices of bread and none of them tasted good (or something to that effect). It’s much tastier to put 100% of a pat onto one slice, than 20% onto five slices.
As a small biz owner, you have a limited amount of time & energy you can put toward marketing. I promise you’ll be more effective if you focus all of your efforts on one platform rather than spread your efforts thin across multiple.
But, Kinsey, why don’t we just push out the same posts to all the platforms?
There are several reasons why I would discourage this.
social media is not one-size-fits-all.
Firstly, all social media platforms vary in post requirements & formatting, audience and algorithm. A one-size-fits-all post will not perform as well on all the platforms as a post created intentionally for a specific platform.
For example, let’s look at tagging posts. To tag another account on Instagram, you would simply type @handle, whereas on Facebook and Twitter, you will need to begin typing @handle, then select the correct account from a dropdown menu to create the link. Similarly, hashtags are very important on Instagram and Twitter, but not as useful on Facebook.

engagement is where the magic happens (and you can’t batch that.)
Secondly, a great social media strategy requires engagement and nurturing. Even if you do push out your posts to multiple platforms, the magic truly lies in the interaction afterward. This is the most important factor in organic social media marketing - and honestly, this is where most business owners fail.
When you post to 5 different platforms, you’ll be splitting your attention between 5 different audiences. Do you really want to be checking notifications and engaging on 5 social media accounts every day? I didn’t think so.
You’ll either be spreading yourself thin across multiple platforms - which will not allow you to develop genuine relationships with your followers - OR you’ll be shafting at least one of your audiences.
And believe me, if you nurture your 500 Instagram followers and ignore your 50 Facebook followers, the FB nerds will still notice the lack of effort. This is because social media is very much a ME game. People often don’t realize what how much energy you’re putting another platform. They’ll only see your absence on their platform of choice.
The best way to build your brand’s presence on social media is TO BE PRESENT & SOCIAL. Your goal is to cultivate community and conversation around your brand. You want your ideal customers to feel seen and heard. You want to make them feel special. And it’s very hard to manage & nurture ALL the audiences.
